Respeitável leitor(a), este é mais um capítulo da coluna “History from Hell” cujas minha ações serão: descrever os fatos históricos relacionados ao magnífico e emblemático álbum “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas”; publicar a honrosa entrevista exclusiva concedida por Teloch (guitarrista da banda Mayhem) ao site Roadie Metal; destacar dez ótimas imagens do capítulo espetacular da DMDS World Tour 2018, realizado no Rio de Janeiro – Brasil (as imagens encontram-se no final da matéria, após o texto em inglês).
Inicialmente deve-se saber que o trabalho musical em análise foi lançado no ano de 1994, sendo o primeiro álbum completo de estúdio gravado pela banda Mayhem. Deixaremos as superstições e lendas de lado a trabalharemos com fatos históricos, a arte da capa e a composição das canções. Garanto que após a leitura suas concepções serão diferentes e quem sabe tu poderás aprender sobre os temas ou aprimorar seus conhecimentos prévios.
A emblemática arte da capa do álbum “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas” retrata a Catedral de Nidaros – situada em Trondheim, na Noruega – que por sua vez originou-se a partir de uma tumba construída para abrigar os restos mortais do Rei Olavo II. A realeza em destaque é de origem Viking e converteu-se ao Cristianismo após permanecer em terras francesas exilado a mando do Rei Etelredo II da Inglaterra. No ano de 1015, Olavo II regressou à Noruega e destituiu os nobres governantes que comandavam o país, retomou o poder como rei, liderou diversos combates contra os camponeses – vale destacar que a imposição religiosa liderada pela Igreja Católica combatia ferozmente povos e culturas pagãs – e construiu templos por todo território norueguês comandados por líderes do Cristianismo.
A batalha de Stiklestad é considerada como o maior conflito entre camponeses (pagãos) e representantes católicos, sendo consequência da luta desenfreada de cristãos contra qualquer cultura politeísta ou povos sem religião definida. Os camponeses foram vitoriosos e, consequentemente, o Rei Olavo II foi morto em campo de batalha. Alguns anos mais tarde o Rei Magno I ordenou a construção de uma capela de madeira em cima da tumba de Olavo II e somente no século XII iniciou-se a construção da Catedral de Nidaros.
Ao avaliarmos as canções do álbum em destaque, perceberemos que as letras contêm passagens em latim – o próprio título é escrito neste idioma – e com isso podemos concluir que a representação artística de forma geral na verdade retrata os horrores causados por Católicos ao tomarem terras e devastarem a cultura e o credo de povos nativos. O latim era a língua oficial para celebração das missas e conversação entre líderes religiosos, tendo se difundido pela Europa após a cristianização do governo romano. Vale lembrar que as principais rezas e frases ditas em campos de batalha, durante a execução de atrocidades, eram proferidas em latim. Aos olhos de quem sofria as barbaridades, o deus invocado como líder supremo, era motivo de grande temor e desespero. Ao avaliarmos os fatos históricos, qual a verdadeira representação do bem e do mal? A partir do exposto podemos compreender quais motivos levaram uma cultura a desenvolver um estilo musical extremo e crítico como o Black Metal.
Entrevista na íntegra com Teloch (guitarrista da banda Mayhem)
- Há quanto tempo você é guitarrista integrante do Mayhem? Como foi o início do trabalho?
“Começamos a falar sobre isso em 2008 e, em 2009, eles me pediram para participar da banda. Na época eu estava ocupado trabalhando como integrante do Gorgoroth, então tive que recusar o convite. Não é uma situação legal para estar, mas eu tinha algumas turnês reservadas com o ‘Gorgo’ e eu tinha que fazê-las. Por sorte, eles falaram comigo novamente em 2011 e eu estou com a banda Mayhem desde então.”
- O Mayhem é uma das maiores bandas de Black Metal de todos os tempos. Como você se sente por estar fazendo parte da história da banda?
“Com certeza é bacana. O Mayhem foi uma das minhas bandas favoritas quando comecei a entrar no Black Metal. É legal tocar no Mayhem, mas não acho que eu seja muito importante para a história da banda.”
- Quais fatores sociais e culturais te influenciaram para que começasse a tocar Black Metal?
“Eu estava tocando Death Metal antes de entrar no Black Metal, mas quando o Mayhem lançou seu álbum DMDS (De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas) eu fiquei encantado e fui me encaminhando cada vez mais para o Black Metal.”
- Na sua opinião quais bandas norueguesas possuem um futuro promissor?
“Eu não faço ideia. Não acompanho mais o cenário do Black Metal, ultimamente acho muito tedioso.”
- Quais são as principais noções musicais para que um guitarrista possa tocar as músicas do Mayhem? Qual a afinação das guitarras e quais escalas você utiliza?
“Não tenho certeza. Nós afinamos as guitarras de forma diferente em comparação com o que estamos fazendo. Para Mysteriis (DMDS World Tour) nós afinamos em padrão standard (E) e para o outro conjunto de músicas nós afinamos em (D). Eu não sei… quaisquer escalas; é difícil de citar precisamente.”
- O que você pensa sobre Paganismo (especialmente relacionado à cultura Nórdica)?
“Eu realmente não tenho nenhum interesse por esse assunto.”
- Você gostou dos shows que fez aqui no Brasil no mês passado? Deixe uma mensagem para os fãs.
“Gostei sim, é claro! O Brasil é um belo país, de pessoas bacanas. Saudações!”

Respectable reader, this is another chapter from the column “History from Hell” whose my actions will be: to describe the historical facts related to the magnificent and emblematic album “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas”; publish the honorable exclusive interview given by Teloch (guitar player of Mayhem) to the site Roadie Metal; highlight ten great images of the spectacular chapter of the DMDS World Tour 2018, held in Rio de Janeiro – Brazil. Initially it should be known that the musical work under analysis was released in 1994, being the first full studio album recorded by Mayhem. We will leave the superstitions and legends aside we will work with historical facts, the art of the cover and the composition of the songs. I guarantee that after reading your conceptions will be different and who knows you will be able to learn about the subjects or to improve your previous knowledge.
The emblematic artwork on the cover of the album “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas” depicts the Nidaros Cathedral – located in Trondheim, Norway – which in turn originated from a tomb built to reserve the remains of King Olaf II. The prominent royalty is of Viking origin and was converted to Christianity after remaining in French lands exiled under the command of King Aethelred II of England. In the year 1015, Olaf II returned to Norway and deposed the noble rulers who ruled the country, regained his power as king, led various combats against the peasants – it is worth noting that the religious imposition led by the Catholic Church fought fiercely pagan peoples and cultures – and built temples all over Norwegian territory led by leaders of Christianity.
The Battle of Stiklestad is considered the greatest conflict between peasants and Catholic representatives, as a consequence of the unbridled struggle of Christians against any polytheistic culture or peoples without defined religion. The peasants were victorious and, consequently, King Olaf II was killed on the battlefield. Some years later King Magnus I ordered the construction of a wooden chapel on top of the tomb of Olaf II and only in 12th century began the construction of the Cathedral of Nidaros. In evaluating the songs on the featured album, we will note that the lyrics contain passages in Latin – the title itself is written in this language – and with this we can conclude that the artistic representation in general portrays the horrors caused by Catholics in taking land and devastate the culture and creed of native peoples. Latin was the official language for mass celebrations and conversation among religious leaders, having spread throughout Europe after the Christianization of Roman rule. It is worth remembering that the main prayers and phrases spoken on battlefields during the execution of atrocities were rendered in Latin. In the standpoint of those who suffered the barbarities, the god who was invoked as the leader of everything, was a cause of great fear and despair. When evaluating historical facts, what is the true representation of blessing and evil? From the foregoing we can understand what motivated a culture to develop an extreme and critical musical style like Black Metal.
Interview with Teloch (Mayhem)
- How long time have you playing guitar in Mayhem? How was the work started?
“We started to talk about it in 2008, and in 2009 they asked me to join. At the time I was busy with Gorgoroth, so I had to turn them down. Not a cool situation to be in, but I had some tours booked with ‘Gorgo’ I had to do. Luckily they asked me again in 2011 and I have been with them since then.”
- Mayhem is one of the greatest Black Metal bands of all time. How do you fell about being part of the band’s history?
“Of course it’s nice, Mayhem was one of my favourite bands when started getting into Black Metal. It’s nice to play in it, but I don’t think I’m very important to the band’s history.”
- What social and cultural factors influenced you to start playing Black Metal?
“I was playing Death Metal before getting into Black Metal, but when Mayhem released their DMDS (De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas) album I was sold and got more and more into Black Metal.”
- In your opinion, which Norwegian bands have a promising future?
“I have no idea, I don’t follow the Black Metal scene anymore. I find it utterly boring.”
- What the main musical notions for a guitar player to play Mayhem’s songs? What the tuning of you guitar and which scales do you use the most?
“Not sure, we tune differently compared to what we are doing. For Mysteriis (DMDS World Tour) we tune in standard E, and for the other set we tune in D. I don’t know… any scales, so hard for me to say.”
- What do you think about Paganism (especially related to the Norse culture)?
“Don’t have any meanings about it really!”
